St. Valentine is the patron saint of prisoners. As of 2015, the US has had the highest prison population in the world. Under the #45’s regime, the Prison Industrial Complex is spreading its tentacles: attempting to normalize the Border Patrol abduction of babies and children, thinly veiling the genocidal practice of non-consensual adoption of children separated from their asylum-seeking parents, and as of late January, engaging in the medical torture through the force-feeding of 9 ICE detainees in El Paso – a practice decried as unethical by the even the relatively conservative International Red Cross.
The Health Justice Commons was founded to address issues such as these and to catalyze intersectional health justice movement building. To transform the MIC and its complicity with many of the growing horrors of proto-fascism, late capitalism, and climate change, we need to first equip our communities with the knowledge to analyze the MIC, its hidden history, its entanglement with oppressive institutions and major big polluting corporations. This is what our upcoming course offers.
